The Seventh Biennial Arts and TechnologySymposium at Connecticut College is a major international conference ofpresentations, papers, exhibits, performances, concerts, and panels devoted to exploring the increasing links in the interdisciplinary worlds of arts,sciences, media and technology.

The schedule of events begins on Thursday, March 4 and ends Sunday,March 7. There are over 100 participants during the four days.

Three keynote speakers begin each day's eventsand include:

Roger Dannenberg -Professor of Computer Science and Music at Carnegie Mellon University willbe presenting a paper titled "Machine Intelligence for InteractiveArt" which addresses the use of computers in creating responsive andparticipatory works. Dannenberg will illustrate his ideas with his computermusic work and speculate on the implications for other media.

Margaret Morse - AssociateProfessor of Film and Electronic Media at the University of California atSanta Cruz will be presenting a paper titled "Deep Metaphor" whichaddresses the commonplace but seldom closely examined terms of "interaction"and "immersion" and their manifestation in pieces selected fromvarious genres in the cyberarts.

Neil Postman - ThePaulette Goddard Professor of Media Ecology, and Chair of the Departmentof Culture and Communication at New York University will be presenting apaper titled "Six Questions About Technology" which will addressissues concerning techology in our lives.

EX MACHINA, a curatedexhibition in Cummings Art Galleries will run concurrently and include worksby Arthur Gansonand Janet Zweig.Their work ranges from curious thinking systems that communicate to poeticprecision and movement as homage to mechanism.

Presentations throughout the conference will includetopics of interactivity, virtual reality, cognition, information technologies,applications in video and film, music (composition, performance, theory,interactivity), experimental theater, compositional process, innovativeuse of technology in education, computer simulations of physical phenomena,scientific visualization and social, ethical, gender issues in arts andtechnology.
